Jørgen Vold Rennemo (born 1989) is a Norwegian mathematician with a master’s degree from the University of Oslo in 2010 and a PhD from Imperial College London in 2015. He was then a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Oxford from 2015 to 2017. In 2017 he came to the University of Oslo, first as a postdoctoral fellow and from 2021 as an associate professor.

Rennemo’s research field is algebraic geometry. His interests span the theory and applications of derived categories, in particular enumerative geometry, Donaldson–Thomas invariants, homological projective duality, Hilbert schemes, and the birational geometry of threefolds and fourfolds.

Rennemo is both a creative problem solver and a theory builder, with enormous breadth and depth, who publishes in broad and highly prestigious journals. It is particularly within the topic of derived categories that he has achieved his strongest results.

Rennemo’s perhaps most striking result is the solution of the “Crepant Resolution” conjecture in the paper “A proof of the Donaldson-Thomas crepant resolution conjecture”, written with Sjoerd Beentjes and John Calabrese and published in Inventiones Mathematicae in 2022. This is a very central and deep conjecture in enumerative geometry, motivated by phenomena in string theory, and was formulated by Bryan, Cadman and Young (published in 2012). To solve the conjecture, the authors introduce new techniques related to “wall-crossing” in the derived category and in motivic Hall algebras.

Another important contribution is the introduction of the theory of Hori-mological duality in the paper “Hori-mological projective duality”, written with Ed Segal and published in Duke Mathematical Journal in 2019. This is a large theoretical framework that makes it easier to carry out computations with derived categories for a class of algebraic varieties. More precisely, the paper gives a partial solution to a conjecture of A. Kuznetsov on homological projective duality by interpreting and proving a certain duality of non-abelian gauged linear sigma models introduced by K. Hori. The remarkable phenomenon of homological projective duality among derived categories of coherent sheaves on projective varieties was discovered by Kuznetsov (published in 2007). A further contribution by Rennemo within this topic is “The homological projective dual of \(\mathrm{Sym}^2 \mathbb{P}(V)\)”, published in Compositio Mathematica in 2020. Here Rennemo generalizes the case of the Veronese embedding, worked out by Kuznetsov, to the case of the natural morphism \(\mathrm{Sym}^2 \mathbb{P}(V) \to \mathbb{P}(\mathrm{Sym}^2 V)\), where \(V\) is a vector space; as an interesting application, Rennemo finds a new proof of the derived equivalence of a pair of non-birational Calabi–Yau threefolds, which had previously been shown by Hosono and Takagi.

In the paper “Hochschild cohomology versus the Jacobian ring and the Torelli theorem for cubic fourfolds”, written with Daniel Huybrechts and published in Algebraic Geometry in 2019, Rennemo gives a new proof of the famous global Torelli theorem for smooth cubic fourfolds, first proved by Claire Voisin with entirely different techniques. The work is an example of how the very abstract theory of derived categories can be applied to prove a fundamental theorem in the study of cubic fourfolds. Another main result of the paper concerns the structure of a certain variant of Hochschild cohomology of the Kuznetsov category of a smooth hypersurface.

In the recent paper “Fano varieties with torsion in the third cohomology group”, written with John Christian Ottem and just published in Journal für die reine und angewandte Mathematik, Rennemo finds the first known examples of Fano varieties with torsion in the third cohomology group. These examples are constructed as double covers of linear sections of rank loci of symmetric matrices, and can be regarded as higher-dimensional analogues of the Artin–Mumford threefold. As an application, the authors answer a question of Claire Voisin concerning coniveau and strong coniveau filtrations of rationally connected varieties.

Rennemo has also studied the cohomology of the Hilbert scheme of points on varieties and has obtained important results with applications to curve-counting theory in “Universal polynomials for tautological integrals on Hilbert schemes” (Geometry & Topology 2017) and “Homology of Hilbert schemes of points on a locally planar curve” (JEMS 2018).

In conclusion, Rennemo’s research output is remarkable, with many groundbreaking results that have established him as a leading researcher in algebraic geometry at a young age.
